1965 Ford Mustang Restoration (coupe) 289 V8

Project Thread: 1965 Ford Mustang Coupe Restoration

Hey everyone,

After a few requests from some of you, I figured it was time to start a proper thread to document the slow but steady resurrection of my 1965 Ford Mustang Coupe.

A Bit of Background

I picked this car up in early 2025 — almost exactly 60 years to the month since it rolled out of the Metuchen plant in New Jersey. Pretty wild to think it’s been around that long.

She’s definitely seen better days. The previous owner had started a restoration, but only just. So what I got was a mostly disassembled car with a few things loosely bolted together — basically a blank slate with potential (and a lot of work ahead).

The first few photos show it as it arrived, plus a bit of minor assembly I’ve done just to get things looking more complete and to ensure the body goes together.

What’s Next

The plan is to bring this car back to life over time — no rush, just a proper job done right.
I’ll post updates as things progress, with plenty of photos along the way.

Stay tuned — and feel free to chime in with tips, advice, or just general encouragement.
I’ll definitely need it!

I test fit the front end to check it all aligns still:

Next step is to get the cowl and dash replaced as they are rusted out. This is what I am in the middle of now!

Everything’s fixable  great project, have fun. might take a while but looks fun!

Thank you, Hoping to have the front end metal work and priming done before the end of the year.

Then I can hope to get the engine and transmission put in and try to get it running before starting on the metal work for the rear of the car next year.

If anyone has information about this car (info relating to the data plate) I’m interested to hear from you. Sadly it seems the data plate for this car is either missing or excessively damaged that I cannot do anything with it.

Small amount of work done on the Cowl and Dashboard:

New doner dash + cowl prepped and zinc primered.

Firewall partially repaired:

Next to grind the welds and protect them from the elements until we are ready to do the proper prep work for painting.

I see you finally opened the lego box

wow that is not cool

There’s a wee bit of backstory that you’re missing out on here lol
