Air Vehicles!

Who knows how to fly the BELL407 or AN-12? Because if you do, I must suggest you join the multiple aircraft servers out there! They are packed with all imaginable aircraft possibilities and upgrades! It is a lot of fun to give it a go and battle it out 5,000 feet up!

Plug the servers! If they are safe I might even put them on the social medias.

Good idea! I’ll give it a go!

aircraft? in this fluid dynamics model?

Terribly confused, my friend. Would you mind explaining what you mean by that?

with pleasure

beamNG is notorious for having one of the worst fluid dynamics in the simulator genre, this includes but not limited to aeroelasticity (vibrations or flutter which can lead to structural failure), aerodynamics (force produced by air) and fluid resistance (aka drag which is a force dependant on the velocity). not to necessarily ■■■■ on a literal early access school project, though, this is my subjective opinion. anyway, because beamNG uses a softbody physics simulation, every single coltris (triangle), which has properties, to SOME degree, of aerodynamics, is INDEPENDENT of one another, producing resistance not against the airflow, but against its angle of attack. this may sound the same, but what this basically means is that you will be unable to reach high speeds with deterministic physics (i.e. with vSync enabled) in beamNG, unless you are, of course, to use non-deterministic physics (which ARE on by default, so if you are wondering, for example, how do people drive faster in a straight line in the exact same vehicle - it is due to the game having non-deterministic physics that are dependant on the FRAMERATE), however, there is a caveat - there is simply too much of drag (to be precise, its coefficient quantity, in very unrealistic proportions, or rather the way they were calculated and implemented!) on all of the softbody nodes, and, MOREOVER, no, it doesnt end here - you will have to maintain a very high framerate (in the thousands!) to actually reach such speeds without physics going batshit crazy. it also means that every one of them, the coltris, is constantly applying such undesired lift forces, whether you like it or not - this can be observed in the vehicle config > debug > aerodynamics - sorry, this is off the top of my head - you can see that they are pointing in EVERY direction, this is basically your primitive streaklines (or streamlines), not very aerodynamic, is it? so, because the physics are non-deterministic, in my personal experience, every time i have driven a car with a spoiler (!) or flown an aircraft past 300-400 km/h, i found that beamNG’s fluid dynamics literally want to disintegrate your vehicle due to aerodynamic instability (which shouldnt be happening at such relatively low speeds, this is not mach 1!). there is a safe margin, however - nobody in beamNG/MP is going to be driving or flying that fast without losing control and without crashing in the next 5 seconds anyway, so nothing to worry about. this is one of the reasons that every aircraft mod for beamNG has a “speed limit” - because it physically cannot move any faster in THIS fluid dynamics model, even if it is a jet engine - propellers and rotors can only spin so fast in this game. this is all very unfortunate, but there is actually one sketchy solution at the moment that you can edit: making your vehicle’s JBeams indestructible by editing beamStrength to FLT_MAX, which will effectively convert your vehicle into a rigidbody (!) model. and while true, there should be some elasticity of the aircraft’s skin, beamNG is perhaps a bit too soft, too flexible. well, at least this is what i have observed years ago (before the 0.20 updates there was a different, less conservative physics model, which popularised many helicopter mods, however, they no longer work as good as they once were nowadays!). oh, and yes, this also applies to hydrodynamics - basically the same forces, and it also squishes your vehicle. but yeah, i think my point still stands: beamNG is a pretty poor flight simulator with ■■■■■■ automotive AND aircraft flight dynamics with extremely fragile aeroelasticity simulation (evident by a catastrophic aeroelastic flutter - also known as “why the ■■■■ is this shaking so bad” at laughable speeds of as slow as 0.25 mach), but yeah, they can be better, for sure! just give it 10 more years.

P.S. you wouldnt care or comprehend such insane oversights and a huge ■■■■■■■ “■■■■ you” to physics as a science if you are but a simple humanitarian. when i play a game, i am literally autistic like that - i just ■■■■■■■ hate it if its done incorrectly or unrealistically, especially if its a simulator (!) advocating for real life advancements in automotive technology (ISO 26262 and SOTIF ISO 21448). with this game of yous, mate, the only proper advancement would be one down the ■■■■■■■. i am perhaps one out of 10 people who absolutely despises the tyre simulation in this ■■■■■■■ simulator. its a cruel, cruel joke, that - static and kinetic friction simulation made by a 9 year old. last time they cared about PHYSICS was in 0.24, for ■■■■’s sake. this is one of those studios that do it completely wrong and waste a lot of time - they have an unstable buggy physics engine and YET they keep adding a bunch of useless ■■■■ on top of it. they will have to eventually rewrite their code. it just hurts so much when i see them add more audio features when all of this will be gone, including all of the mod support and backwards compatibility. what a waste. but uhm, yeah. keep flying planes that this game will never ever accomodate. perhaps i talk too much and am clearly crazy, innit?

Hmm, thank you for making that more clear. But this seems to arise a brand new question… how, did I fly one of my aircraft (ME-262) upwards of 600KM/H? An intriguing question, I must say, I shall look into it and see what could possibly allow that.

And I also must say that your writing skills are truly impeccable. A very talented author couldn’t possibly announce that better than you have. Thank you.

oh ffs mate i rambled about for a laugh. physics’ ■■■■■ mate.

i know that me. 262 mod. for me, it didnt accelerate faster than 300-350 kph, so YEAH, non-determinism at its FINEST. every beamNG physics are personalised to every one’s framerate. my point still stands.

hey what are those servers? i only know of 3.

Thank you for explaining, very interesting!

Well, I play on the Realistic RP, (RolePlay) which is pretty much all I know of. But sadly, there really aren’t many…

oi mate i wonder why there really are none to absolutely zero AIRCRAFT ROLEPLAY servers. maybe cos the physics are â– â– â– â– â– ? oh but this ya know, just an educated guess.

I know! The only good one is The Cave RP, positioned in Italy.
