I followed all the instructions for creating a server on BeamMP. I used a VPN. It says that the server is offline. Is this because I am not connected to my own server ? I tried to direct connect but when it was connecting it came up stating, " Connection failed ". I don’t know why or how to connect ? Help !!
What are you using a VPN for? You need to check if your VPN supports port forwarding. If it does not it will cause connection issues.
The set up instructions say that if you use a VPN you can skip the first step and you don’t have to port forward. It says that using a VPN is easier. My personal understanding of using a VPN for gaming is that it’s secure because you don’t need to send your own IP address. The VPN sends it’s IP address in place of yours. I will check whether my VPN ports forward. When I direct connect do I need to change the port to a port supplied to me by my VPN ? Also, do I need to change the IP address to the IP address that I have been supplied with by my VPN ?
You can think of a VPN as a CGNAT
Which is going to hinder you from hosting a server at home.
You need to use the IP your router is assigned. Assuming that one isn’t CGNATted already. If the server is in the same network you can use the LAN IP. If it is hosted on your PC use 127.0.0.1 as the documentation describes
Is 127.0.0.1 the public WAN address ? I rang Telstra and they said that mobile internet doesn’t come from a router. It comes from a tower. Therefore port forwarding can’t be done. I then went looking for a modem and a router. I have found that TP link sell mobile router’s that port forward. I’m not sure how considering that they are mobile ? They need the public WAN address to port forward.
Correct. Mobile Routers also employ CGNAT.
127.0.0.1 is definetely not the WAN IP. 127.0.0.1 is always localhost.
BeamMP cannot assist you in buying a router/modem. Please consult your ISP further to find an approproiate solution.
The best option I can offer you in this situation is to sign up with one of our partnered server hosting services. Speaking as a player and not as a staff member of BeamMP I personally use, and am partnered with PedalHost. They come in at a pretty low monthly cost.
Horizon did me well when I was with them too, I can’t vouch for any of the other service providers personally, but if they are partnered we have verified them and have receved good feedback on their services.
